The Future is Bright

What inspires someone to become an entrepreneur?

Passion and creativity, certainly. Ambition and opportunity, of course. Courage, a touch of masochism, or a certain unemployability, perhaps.

One thing is for certain though, we all are able to do what we do because along the way, people believed in us and supported our ideas.

The business of making wine is notoriously risky, expensive, and slow. As a result, our industry is understandably traditional, conservative even, with most companies choosing to follow proven formulas.

Obsidian has always had a different approach. From farming extreme landscapes, to innovative barrel coopering, to our ‘Rabbit Hole’ experiments in the cellar, the core driver of our development over three decades is still the idea of constant exploration, growth, and change.

In 2022, we launched our Rabbit Hole Winemaker Entrepreneur Program, now on its fourth vintage. An incubator approach intended to share the equipment, expertise, and community we have built with like-minded winemakers who are just starting out. They bring the commitment and passion, we help nurture it. In return, they inspire and challenge us. We lift each other.

The program is led by Casey Graybehl, our Production Director and R&D Winemaker. Casey is the driving force behind our Rabbit Hole wines and an entrepreneur himself, mentoring others through a similar journey to his own.

In the world of wine, we are experiencing a generational shift. People are drinking differently, more selectively, and are looking for alternatives to the corporate sameness that has become common in wine.

Simultaneously, we have never seen so many young entrepreneurs getting into wine, exploring new ideas, excavating old ones, and making a thrilling variety of styles. The future is bright.

Our Winterfest open house in the winery cellar is our annual thank you party to all of you for your support. This December 7th, we are delighted to introduce you to our Rabbit Hole Entrepreneurs and their wines alongside our latest Obsidian releases. We invite you to join us to taste a bit of the future.
