2023 “Primo's Hill” Pinot Noir

TASTING NOTES
The gravelly slopes that give Primo’s Hill its name consistently produce the most complex and intricate lots of Pinot Noir. The barrels selected for the 2023 vintage marry the delicate floral freshness of Martini clone, the lush red-fruited profile of Pommard 5, and the dark, structured style of Mariafeld clone to create this singular bottling. Aromas of black cherries, sage, and red licorice lead to a dark, earthy palate with body, depth, and length.
HISTORY
Poseidon Vineyard, located at the confluence of Carneros Creek and the Napa River, was planted in 1973 by the Molnar Family to the Burgundian varietals: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The maritime environment of the Carneros grape-growing region delivers cool, foggy mornings followed by warm days that slowly nurture ripening. This seaside influence is particularly acute on our estate, where one can see the masts of boats bobbing in the water just a few steps to the south. A gravelly hillside at the northwest corner of the vineyard sits below the historic homesite. Primo’s Hill, named for the home’s original resident, gives this barrel selection bottling it’s name.
VINTAGE 2023
Back to back years of ample rains replenished vines that had been struggling from many years of drought. This was generally great news for our vineyards and environment, and brought balanced flavors to the grapes. The pervasive breezy conditions at this seaside site ensured no concerns of mildew or botrytis despite the moisture throughout the season.
WINEMAKING
The first vintage of a new era on Primo’s Hill with all three clones of Pinot Noir grown on the site: old vine Martini clone, Pommard 5 clone planted in 2019, and Mariafeld clone planted in 2021. 10% of the fruit was fermented whole cluster for added complexity. When fermentation was complete, we pressed and aged all lots in 300L barrels, 20% new. The final blend was crafted from the most complex and intricate individual barrels.
