Every now and then, an idea comes along that you feel you just must do.

As we’ve journeyed over the course of the last 20 years, our adventures have taken us to volcanic vineyards, the forests of Hungary, and to seaside vineyards. Recently, we found a home base right here in our backyard of Sonoma, and we got busy building something that is uniquely Obsidian.

In a few months' time, we will be opening Obsidian Base Camp at the Sonoma Square, in the heart of downtown Sonoma.

The idea behind Base Camp is to create a space for people to gather, to create, and to commune. We’ve designed a space that is more workshop than tasting room. Sure—you’ll be able to taste wine there—but our hope is that you will learn there, meet there, be inspired there.

Set back off the Sonoma Square in an obsidian zen garden, we hope the space will be as relaxing as it is inspiring, and offer a place to not only think but also plan your future adventures.

Obsidian Base Camp will be our spiritual home, but also a place for you and friends to start their exploration of the stunning nature that is California’s North Coast.

Our plans are to open in May 2024—we'll be sharing our progress toward that goal here below. Please follow along here and we look forward to welcoming you soon. 

January 2024: Collecting & Setting Boulders

Our first priority for Base Camp is to bring nature to the site. For us, that means filling the space with California native plants and the essence of our wild home on Obsidian Ridge Vineyard.

Obsidian is extremely dense and heavy, as well as being very fragile. Moving these beautiful boulders from Obsidian Ridge Vineyard to Obsidian Base Camp was no simple feat.

Next we want to open up the interior of the building to bring the outdoors in, so that we can experience the natural environment even when we are inside. That meant a LOT of demo.

February 2024: Infrastructure & Rain

A very wet February meant a lot of time indoors on things like framing and wiring, but we didn't let a little rain stop us altogether. Here Arpad and Douglas carefully selected the spot for each gray pine under the close supervision of a trio of neighbors who are clearly enjoying the weather.  

The custom fence is built to allow breezes to pass through and plants to climb.

March 2024: Interior Coming Together

March Madness indeed - lots of progress this month as we transition from structural work to the fun part.  For starters, the gaping hole in the building finally holds our new entrance doors. The blackened steel back bar is in place, walls are getting painted, and those of you who are familiar with our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir labels may already know how much we love the Japanese art of Shou Sugi Ban....

April 2024: The Fun Stuff

Finishing touches are going in, from staff planting a garden of California native plants to creation of an exciting art installation, we are gearing up for opening in Mid-May!
